As a new Bass Fisherman, when I would go out the rest of the guys like for lunch and they would start using terms I had never heard, I thought to myself, “OK, I have to find out what that means.” I figured the Internet would be a god source for that information. And I was right. I discovered a website called FishingTipsAndTecniques.com. Going further in their website I found not only a page of Bass Fishing Terms but also a page of General Fishing terms. I’m going to share a few of them with you but you can see the entire list at http://www.fishingtipsandtechniques.com/bass-fishing/bass-terms.php. Here are the terms I needed help with:

    • Comeback Lure – A lure selected to throw when bass misses the primary lure being used.
    • Finesse Fishing – A technique that implies a slow presentation and requiring the angler to feel a fish to set the hook. This technique targets bass that have become lethargic from a cold front.
    • Hawg (or Hog) - Slang for a large bass.
    • Jig-And-Frog – Simply a bass style jig dressed up with a plastic or pork-rind frog. Jig-And-Pig – Term used to describe a bass fishing jig with a plastic body or pork rind attached.
    • Wacky Rig – Method of rigging a plastic worm through the middle of the bait without any sinker attached to the line.
    • Walking The Dog– A technique used when retrieving a lure such as the Heddon Spook that causes the lure to be retrieved in a zig-zag pattern.
    • Weedguard – A mechanical device typically consisting a single piece of spring wire that covers the open gap of a hook to make it weedless.
    • Weedless – A description of a lure designed to be fished in heavy cover with a minimum amount of snagging. Various strategies are often employed to make a lure weedless.

The Glossary Of Fishing Terms And Slang can be found here: http://www.fishingtipsandtechniques.com/fishing/fishing-glossary.php.

I would recomend going to this website and seeing all it has to offer.

    Scum Frog Bigfoot

    Scum Frog Bigfoot

“Southern Lure Company knew they had a winner when they designed the Bigfoot. The Scum Frog Bigfoot features the erratic action of a soft bodied plastic frog and the buoyancy and snag free benefits of a hollow bodied frog. Whether you will be fishing open water, sparse cover or the thickest vegetation the Scum Frog Bigfoot is the frog for you.”

That’s what the tackle warehouse has to say about this sweet lure. It is weedless and soft bodied. I’m going to try it the next time I’m out on the water, as I bought one while I was at the Bass Pro Shop in Mantica CA.

7 NEW METALLIC Frogs: Proven Big Bass Catchers
7 NEW METALLIC Frogs: Proven Big Bass Catchers

I saw these on eBay and had to have them. I was told to get some frogs by a couple of members of the Bass Brigade, so I thought these would be perfect. I couldn’t beat the price. $15.85 for all seven of them. The description on eBay was as follows:

“I’ve sold at least 75,000 of these right here in this spot on eBay before I ran into supply problems last spring. I had a long list of testimonials, too, but I lost it because it’s been so long since I relisted. These lures have produced at least one big bass money-fish in an Illinois tournament and no doubt thousands of fun fish. I won’t try to retell the stories, but here’s my testimonial: YOUR MONEY BACK IF NOT COMPLETELY SATISFIED.

“This quarter ounce, 2.25-inch lure casts like a bullet, rattles and wobbles to about 18 inches deep on retrieve. At rest, it hangs in the water with its nose and eyes just above water and legs almost straight down just like a real frog suspends on top of the water. These lures catch fish. The pattern is an old one that originated in Japan. It is known as the Super Frog in Europe. Each lure comes individually packaged with hook point shields. Don’t forget to get rid of those before fishing. Buyers get a color set of seven lures as pictured. “

I debated for about a week before buying them. I hope to have them before my next trip. I’ll keep you readers posted with their performance. After all, Money back if not satisfied the ad says. I would not be one to do that, as I just might not catch anything.

Bass Pro Shops® XPS® Lazer Eye™ Floating Mouse

Bass Pro Shops® XPS® Lazer Eye™ Floating Mouse

I bought this lure on a whim. Only because it looked cool and interesting. I’ve been trying to figure out why a bass would go after this. now according to the Bass Pro Shop website, “Hungry bass love a juicy mouse. The Lazer Eye’s soft, hollow body is weighted, allowing for longer casts. Its weedless design lets you fish right through the thickest cover, and its lifelike features will fool even the wariest bass every time.”

There will be a complete review of this lure after I use it in real conditions. The one I bought is the one in the middle. Here are the spec of the lure:

    • Length: 2-1/2″
    • Weight: 1/2 oz.

The lure cost me $3.99 at the Bass Pro Shop in Mantica. So keep a lookout for an update to this review.

    Shakespeare Synergy TI6U
    Shakespeare Synergy TI6U

For those of us just learning to cast a line the open spinning reels have a lot to be desired. Because of that I prefer the closed top type reels. Like the Shakespeare Synergy TI6U. the features of the reel are:

    • 2 ball bearings
    • Polished stainless steel front cone and rear cover.
    • Titanium line guide.
    • Insta-Grab™ dual Titanium pickup pins.
    • Durable elastomer pinch ring for reduced line wear.
    • On/off anti-reverse and bait clicker.
    • Strong metal handle with soft-grip rubber knobs.
    • Left/right convertible retrieve.
    • Available in box and blister.

Unlike most reels that are top mounted, the TI6U is bottom mounted and has a trigger release. It holds 90 yards of 6# line. I cannot wait to try this one out. Practicing in my backyard I have increased my cast by about 20 feet. So I should beable to catch some monster hogs next time I go out.
